Heavy rain causes flooding in Uganda
09/03/2010
Torrential rain has caused flooding in Uganda, displacing thousands of inhabitants from their homes.
The heavy downpours have continued to add to the destruction and devastation caused by landslides earlier in the month, Irin News reports.
More than 2,000 people in the Butalega district are now homeless after water engulfed their properties.
Edward Wabudi, the resident district commissioner, said that seven villages have been affected and recommended farmers take action to prevent damage to their harvests.
He stated: "We are advising people to uproot their crops that are ready so that their food is not destroyed in the gardens."
A number of relief agencies have been sent to help out in the area and occupants have headed to higher ground to receive food and materials, the news provider announced.
Last week, over 200 Ugandans were missing and feared dead after the same rainfall caused landslides in the Bududa region of the African country.
