South Africa receives money for condoms from the UK

09/03/2010

The UK has donated £1 million to South Africa for it to purchase contraception to prevent possible spread of HIV and AIDS during this year's football World Cup.

It is hoped the handout may go some way towards helping the country reach its target of gathering one billion condoms before the games commence.

An announcement was made by the Department for International Development (Dfid) at a meeting in London, which included a number of African countries struggling with high levels of the disease.

Dfid said the reason for the endowment was to support South Africa's "leadership and drive to turn the tide on their epidemic".

Last month, the host of the tournament - which is expecting an influx of around 450,000 visitors for the event and is reported to have the highest number of HIV and AIDS victims in the world - announced they were increasing their own supply of the birth control device.
