Flooding 'displaces thousands' in Kenya

11/03/2010

Flooding has caused thousands of people to leave their homes in Kenya and has triggered health alarms in the country.

At least 10,000 Kenyans have had to abandon their properties, especially in the north, according to Irin News.

Much livestock has either drowned or is missing and dozens of houses have been submerged - creating fear of waterborne diseases.

The most affected areas are Mandera in the northeast, where 2,100 individuals have been displaced and the northwest region of Lokori in Turkana - which has seen 3,600 citizens evacuated.

Titus Mungou, the Kenyan Red Cross Society's communication manager, told the news provider: "In Mandera, flooding from the River Daua is ongoing … The entire clean water system is now un-operational."

Heavy flooding recently caused many people in Uganda to leave their homes as well, with more than 2,000 natives forced to move away from their livelihoods in the Butalega district alone.
