Flood situation in Mozambique 'under control'

12/03/2010

The flood situation in Mozambique has been described as "under control" by national disaster authorities and aid agencies.

Northern and central regions of the country have seen river heights rise above the warning levels and thousands of individuals have been shepherded to higher, safer ground, Irin News reports.

The national Institute for Disaster Management revealed that 130,000 natives are currently living in risk zones and may be forced to leave their homes if the downpours continue.

However, Leila Pakkala, a representative of Unicef, said that pre-emptive moves had helped limit possible catastrophes.

She explained that 13,000 had been escorted to secure places and that they were "closely monitoring the situation in affected areas to ensure needs are identified and immediately addressed".

Earlier in the week, the news provider announced that around 100,000 inhabitants had been displaced from their properties in Kenya because of the rainfall sweeping much of Africa.
