Girls Aloud star visits hospitals in Uganda

16/03/2010

A Girls Aloud singer has been visiting hospitals in Uganda as part of the Sport Relief campaign.

Kimberley Walsh, 28, took part in the scheme as she guest edited a special edition of Now magazine.

The performer said that the experience drove home the serious nature of the work that needs to be done to improve conditions in the country.

She saw a pregnant woman who had contracted malaria die in hospital along with her unborn child and admitted that she found the circumstances upsetting.

"I did break down and I had to go outside to pull myself together", she explained.

She added, however, that someone in her position did not really have the right to get tearful as the individuals she was dealing with have to deal with such strain on a daily basis.

Earlier in the month, it was reported that thousands of Ugandans had been displaced from their homes following heavy flooding in the country.
