VSO has worked in India since 1958, reopening its programme in 1994 after a 20 year gap. Since 1994, over 115 volunteers have been placed with over 80 NGOs in 15 different states of India.

VSO India is an organisation committed to adopting a rights-based approach in all our programmes and activities, and fundamental to this is addressing the rights of disadvantaged people, including disabled people and people with HIV/AIDS, to equal access to development opportunities and to participate in decision making processes which affect their lives.

In this way, VSO India develops partnerships and places volunteers with Indian NGOs in the sectors of disability, HIV/AIDS and participation and governance and who are active in the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Delhi.
