While you’re overseas you’ll be living and working alongside your colleagues and community, tackling disadvantage as a shared goal. This type of cross-cultural teamwork takes time to develop. You’ll need the time to test your ideas and adapt them to different circumstances and demands. Things can move very slowly in developing countries. Many volunteers reflect that they only began to have a real impact during their second year overseas. Once they had established themselves as respected and valued members of the community.
