Volunteer with IVO
In an age defined by the query, “What’s in it for me?” Is a less simple question, “Why should I volunteer?” Simpler, because the question invites introspection; a time-consuming exercise that went out of the window when instant coffee came in!
Why volunteer your services when you can sell them instead? Why be a volunteer when you can become a VP? Why live in distant Africa when you can reside on Wall Street?
We don’t have the answers, all we have are a few facts and we would like to share with you, in the hope that they will help a prospective volunteer arrive at a conclusion.
Professional commitment
To begin with, volunteering is not about charity. It is about having a symbiotic relationship with a community. It is true that our partners look for professionals willing to use their skills to better the lives of disadvantaged people. But it is also important to note that that they are willing to pay for these skills. This means, they are looking for professional commitment and not just good intentions.
Volunteers have to qualify
Not everyone with good intentions can pack their bag and demand to be sent off. A volunteering assignment is like any other job and requires qualified candidates.
To qualify you need to be a qualified professional with at least three years of post qualification experience. Currently the skills that we are recruiting are:
- business management
- NGO Management
- advocacy
- fundraising
- marketing and communication
- health (including doctors, nurses, midwives and health managers)
- monitoring and evaluation
- social work
- community mobilisation
- HIV and AIDS
- natural resource management
- therapist (physio, occupational, speech and language).
